Polish Diver Krzysztof Starnawski Hopes to Discover the Deepest Underwater Cave

Czech Republic's Hranická Propast might beat Italy’s Pozzo del Merro in terms of the world's deepest flooded cave. At 1,286 feet, Pozzo del Merro is officially recognized as the deepest flooded karstic cavity known in the world but legendary Polish diver Krzysztof Starnawski and the rest of his team have a different opinion and they hope to prove that the deepest abyss in the Czech Republic is deeper. There are probably only three caves like this one in the world as it's been formed by mineral water that, unlike most caves, bubbles from the bottom up. Starnawski has been exploring Hranická Propast for 15 years, but it was only last year when he discovered a small crevice aptly called a “squeeze passage” that led to exploring the unknown.

National Geographic grantee and technical diver Krzysztof Starnawski is on a quest to explore what may be the world's deepest underwater cave. Known as Hranická Propast, the cave is near the town of Hranice in the Czech Republic. The deepest (officially recorded) underwater cave is Italy's Pozzo del Merro, which was measured at 1,286 feet (392 meters). In previous dives, such as the one shown in this video, Starnawski pushed through a narrow passageway and dropped a probe that measured Hranická Propast at a depth of 384 meters before running out of cord. He's back at the Czech cave with his team and will attempt again to measure a depth that he hopes will beat the Italian cave's record.
