Down the Earnslaw Canyon with Mike Enright - The Best New Zealand´s Canyons
To reach the Earnslaw Canyon from Queenstown you either get to Glenorchy by car (1h) or take a 20 minute helicopter flight departing Queenstown, flying over the magnificent Skippers Canyon and Shotover River, swooping over high peaks and heading into the Rees Valley where you'll find it. The Rees Valley with the river of the same name is located north of the Lake Wakatipu. The Earnslaw Canyon itself is rated R18, with 500 meters of vertical decent, and your experience really is the 'Big Daddy' of Canyoning. At 1200m, and between 15 - 20 abseils/rappels this canyon has the power to awaken your inner abilities.
Here, you can be one of the first to experience most demanding decent yet, in the hidden rainforest. At Canyoning.co.nz they offer you a personalized trip with small intimate group sizes of no more than four people (minimum two). A ten hour day with up to six hours of canyoning make this trip one of the best organized in the world. Once you're in the canyon you're totally committed to completing it. This is why they ask that anyone joining them on this experience has a good level of fitness and meets their guides in advance for a pre-trip meet and brief. Previous abseiling/rappelling experience is desirable, if you have no experience you can join either the Queenstown or Routeburn canyons (will be described soon here) to gain confidence and skills with professional tuition prior to your ultimate kiwi mission.
