Geena Krueger – An infinite smile

German waterskier Geena Krueger got my interest through her unstoppable smiles and glitter in the eye. As if there never was a reason to start frowning at the world in the first place. Just a positive approach of a positive girl.Sport is a household name in Geena´s family. Her father is the famous Ralph Krueger, who is a former hockey player and nowadays a top-class hockey trainer, who worked in the renowned NHL or with the Canadian team at the Olympics in Sochi, that won gold medals. Unlike his brother who is walking in his dad´s footsteps and plays hockey league in Switzerland and also for the German National team, Geena has embarked on a waterskiing career and has done very well so.

In the year of 2012 she still skied in all three events but since last year she has been slaloming only. The result came in no time. At the Europeans in Greece Geena won the bronze and also ranked third in the European Ranking List.

Geena holds the German National Women Slalom Record of 2/55/10,75 which is an extraordinary performance and self-evidently she will try to defend her position even this year. At the beginning of this season she took the number one position in the European Ranking List. Therefore, it is obvious that in a fierce slalom competition she will be among hot candidates for a podium finish also at the first Open Europeans in the Czech Republic held in Melice.

What or who comes to your mind if one says the Czech Republic?

I’ve never actually been to the Czech Republic but my first thoughts are hockey, and my two Czech water skiing friends Daniel Odvarko, and Adam Sedlmajer come to my mind.

Is the Europeans in the Czech Republic on your agenda and is it something you look forward to?

Yes it’s defnitely on my agenda! Europeans is one of my favorite tournaments to go to so wouldn’t want to miss it. I’ve seen a few pictures of the site already and it looks beautiful so I’m really looking forward to competing there in August.

Is there going to be any special tune-up for this event?

Not really. Just going to keep training how I usually do and prepare mentally as best as I can to win it this year. That’s my goal!

Who is your biggest role model?

Hands down my dad. He is the most postitive and inspirational person I know who continues to push himself outside of his comfort zone every day. He is very wise with his words but has taught me the most valuable lessons through his own actions. “Actions speak louder than words,“ that’s what he’s taught me and continues to every day.

Do you have any life motto?

I have many life mottos that inspire me and that I try to live by. One of them would be, “There is no life worht living without a passion.“ It really doesn’t matter too much what exactly that passion may be as long as you have something that motivates you, and that you can set goals towards, while doing what you love and having fun.

Is your decision to specialise in slalom final?

No it’s not final. I never conciously decided to stop doing three event skiing but it kind of just developed that way. I love tricking for fun but only ever tricked to get an overall score. As for jumping I defnitely would like to pick that up again but I’m still dealing with minor injuries right now that I don’t want to aggrandize. The Europeans are still over a good three months away so maybe I’ll be back on my jumpers by then! We’ll see.

Why have you decided to specialise in slalom?

Like I said there was never a point where I decided that I’m going to start specializing in slaloming. I really wanted to continue jumping but had to stop last year after doing my first pro tournament in jumping at the Moomba Masters 2013 due to an aggrevating shoulder injury. I miss the rush and adrenaline of jumping so I think it’s just a matter of time until I slip on my jumpers again!

Please tell us something about your most beautiful experience in your waterskiing life.

I really don’t think I can limit it to one beautiful experience. It’s been the whole journey of my waterskiing life that has been so beautiful; from summers at my cottage with my family to competing in my first ever pro event to traveling the world with a ski bag in hand. Besides the fact that waterskiing in itself has brought me so much joy and good pain, it has taught me such valuable lessons in life, brought incredible people into my life, and shaped me into the person I am today.

What would you like to tell the fans and spectators planning on coming to the Europeans?

Every athlete loves a good crowd – so yea just to come out and watch, bring family and friends along and be ready to enjoy the best skiers in Europe compete against each other!
