Whistler's Classic Whitewater Run - The Callaghan Creek Race 2014

British Columbia is a unique, classic kayaking destination. With big mountains, massive snowfall and a northerly location it has a season that extends long into and past the summer months in many parts of the province. One of the areas that benefits from such conditions is Callaghan Valley, the basin of Callaghan Creek. Right here, on 5th of July, 2014, the annual Callaghan Creek Race, a 2 man team, timed race down the full creek, enters its fifth successful year. Well established and recognized as the flagship class V whitewater race in British Columbia it draws a lot of attention. Check it out.

Callaghan Race

Operated by LiquidLore, whitewater guides, the fifth annual Callaghan Race will be happening on Saturday July 5th, 2014. Adding to the weekend, for the second year in a row, will be a time trial race on the Upper Cheakamus on Friday evening before the big event on Saturday. Building on the huge success of last year (50+ participants in both races down the Callaghan and Cheakamus!), this should be the biggest one yet. After a winter with not a lot of snow and the likelihood of very low water on the Callaghan in late July, the date of the race was pushed several weeks earlier to make sure the organizers can still put off a great event.

More information concerning the race can be found on organizer's website.

Callaghan Creek

Callaghan Creek is one of the classic rivers that makes Whistler and southwest British Columbia such a fantastic whitewater kayak destination. It's often the first stop for and is a must do for anyone on a tour of the coast. It's the best after work run for Whistler locals, and people close enough to drive there quickly - once you boof the clean waterfalls you'll know why.

  • Take out coordinates: 50.064946,-123.100606 (next to Cal-Cheak Campsite)
  • Access: easy (the take out is just south of the highway 99 bridge over the creek).
  • What it's like: Whistler's ultra classic. Clean waterfalls, bedrock and boulder gardens.
  • Class: IV-V at medium levels.
  • Scouting/Portaging: Relatively easy, except for portaging the big falls.
  • Level: Visual gauge at take out.
  • Time: 30 minutes to a few hours.
  • When To Go: Reliable season from May through September - runs after rain in the off season.

Arguably the best whitewater kayak river in a zone that is packed full of classic whitewater, the Callaghan is a river not to be missed.
